Certain people on my friends-list may find my most recent additions to the SixMore FAQ... amusing.

Pissing off an admin who already has a well-deserved reputation for bitchiness? Bad fucking idea. Be a dick someplace else. The positions of Asshole and Other Asshole have already been filled.

Oh, and if you haven't already figured it out, [livejournal.com profile] tithonium has resurrected SixMoreDegrees.com. Go. Link. General updates will be posted at [livejournal.com profile] sixmoredegrees. Email questions, bug reports, and feature requests to admin@.

Courtesy [livejournal.com profile] tithonium. This made me laugh so hard I had tears streaming down my face and nearly peed myself. Other than one dropping of the f-bomb at the end, it's completely work-safe.

And then suddenly I am ran over by a truck, composed primarily of sinus goo and muscle strain.

Now... Who wants an aloe plant? Pretty please? With, uh, nutrient-rich ecologically-sound compost on top...

So, yeah. I'm getting plant crazy. No fair taking bets on how long it'll be before I get bored and let all my plants die, now. I managed to keep a plant alive for an entire year, even! My peppercorn's got leaves and new growth and everything! And there's the previously-mentioned nigh-unkillable aloe, which I've had for... Four years? Five?

Keep this in mind as you talk to [livejournal.com profile] tithonium - as of today, he has officially become a member of The Establishment. (I'll be loaning him my cane so we can take turns shouting about those damn kids who need to stay off our lawn.)

P.S. - Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] kablooey, too!

Crock-Pot experiment #2 is in progress. Experiment #1 was an unmitigated disaster, owing to a miscalculation of what constitutes "at least half full" and the general suckitude of prepackaged ingredients. For now, [livejournal.com profile] tithonium and I are starting with simple recipes, as this cooking method is new to both of us. This recipe is basically a potato gratin escalloped potatoes with onion and ham. If it doesn't suck, I'll post it later.

While I was busy rediscovering my love of the Cuisinart (six potatoes sliced in ten seconds, woo!), we went a little overboard with the pre-prep. The kitchen is now saturated in the aroma of oniony doom, but we have figured out that preparing raw onions is guaranteed to keep the dog out of the kitchen. Some day (year?) the smell of alliums will fade from my fingers.

Here's hoping dinner doesn't end up a gloppy mass of cajun potato cardboard...

[crossposted to [livejournal.com profile] nerdvana and [livejournal.com profile] sixmoredegrees]

As of about 3pm, we have electricity, heat, hot water, and the ability to cook food. Servers are back online as of about 9:30 PM - [livejournal.com profile] datavore took the opportunity to do some reorganization while the servers were still powered down. His update is here.

Eight years ago today, [livejournal.com profile] datavore and I lost what remained of our senses and began dating one another. And nobody's died.

Obviously, we need to improve our aim. Or buy bigger weapons. Or stop hiring our hit men at Wal-Mart.

As of yesterday, I'm on the opposite end of the continent than I usually am. I'm in Boston through Wednesday the 1st. Nobody burn down my house, my city, or my dog while I'm gone, 'kay?

[livejournal.com profile] datavore, this goes double... no, triple... no, infinituple for you.

FYI, mail and web are down on any Nerdvana-owned domains (midgard, epiglyph, sixmore, martian, others I'm probably forgetting). The MOO server is up, so I'm guessing rigel has tossed his cookies again.

EDIT: Fixed now - the server wasn't routing over the T1, and I had Speakeasy shut down the DSL line earlier today.

Translation for pirates: Arr, matey! [livejournal.com profile] datavore be walkin' the plank!

Crossposted all over the damn place.

DSL at [livejournal.com profile] nerdvana appears to be down, and [livejournal.com profile] datavore is by all appearances still asleep and unable to investigate. Since I have no idea how late he came to bed last night, I'm not waking his ass up to fix it. This means sixMore, MidgardMOO, hosted servers/domains, and all Rigel accounts are inaccessible (at the very least) until he gets up.

Please stop IMing me to ask when they'll be up. You're impinging upon valuable webslacking time.

UPDATE: 'Sfine now.

DSL appears to be down at [livejournal.com profile] nerdvana at the moment, so sixMore is temporarily unavailable. Luckily, [livejournal.com profile] datavore is already on his way home for lunch, so it should be back up shortly (presuming it's the typical DSL-bridge-locked-up-again problem, and not the longer-duration and more-annoying Speakeasy-fucked-up-again problem).

EDIT: It's back up. The cleaning service accidentally cut power to the DSL bridge while dusting.

I have created the community [livejournal.com profile] sixmoredegrees to post updates for and announcements about SixMoreDegrees. Membership in the community is open, but posting is limited to sixmore administrators [livejournal.com profile] datavore and [livejournal.com profile] loree.

I just finished the On-Call Week From Hell. Eleven page-outs and a late night maintenance window over the course of seven days, during which my phone threatened to eat itself, and then [livejournal.com profile] datavore threatened to eat my phone.

I forgot to shower all weekend, and only left the house six times last week: four times for work, one 15min trip to the grocery store, and out to dinner on Sunday with Marty, [livejournal.com profile] beaq, and [livejournal.com profile] hollyking (who came up to stay the night so he could be fresh for the next day's job interviews).

Holy fuck, but I'm TIRED. Looking forward to Spa Night tonight with [livejournal.com profile] sirriamnis, [livejournal.com profile] rubylou, and friends. I desperately need a massage, or my head is going to pop off.

P.S. - You should all go congratulate [livejournal.com profile] hollyking - yesterday's interviews have already spawned a job offer!

To quote [livejournal.com profile] datavore: "Recently done: Link decay and deletion. FINALLY. Now shut up."

Due to decay relationships, some links need to be deleted twice. To see which links decay and which don't, see the Link Types page. And deleting a link with an implied reverse (i.e. "has had sex with") removes it for both users. Account deletion is still not implemented.

A FAQ is in the works, but I gotta write it first. Until then, read Site Notes - and please read the whole page - before emailing with questions.

Once upon a time in the mid to late '90s, there was this social networking site called Six Degrees. It was pretty good, if somewhat limited. But, like most dot.com doohickeys with no real revenue model, they ran out of money, and now their domain is being used by yet another lame blog site.

[livejournal.com profile] datavore, aka Marty, aka that dork I've dated/lived with for the last 7 1/2 years, has been working on (and by "working on" I mean "has spent every free moment of the last several weeks poking at/noodling with/screaming at") a quasi-replacement. It just passed the 100-user mark this weekend*, and you should go check it out.

Now keep in mind, this site is so very beta. Features and enhancements are changing on a daily (and in some cases hourly) basis. But it's fun, and it's interesting, and Marty could use more feedback from more sources than just me.

If you do sign up, please, for the love of all that's (un)holy, link to someone. And use your real name, or some recognizable combination of your real name and nickname. The point of this exercise is *social* networking, after all, and names like "Wolf" or "Raven" or "JR" and the like are ridiculously nonspecific. This ain't OKCupid, folks.

Clicky-clicky: SixDegrees

* - As I was writing this, we passed the 145-user** mark. I hope our bandwidth holds out...

** - Make that 218 users as of 2006-05-02 08:00 GMT -0:700.

EDIT: Multiple comments deleted due to overdose of LJ-Drama(TM). Personal commentary about specific users belongs elsewhere (6D has a 'dislikes' relationship for a reason).

Power's on, about half the servers are up (mail and MOO servers are up), swapped keys with [livejournal.com profile] datavore, he's working on the rest.

Still not king.

If you read [livejournal.com profile] datavore, you probably already know that [livejournal.com profile] nerdvana has lost power, most likely the result of this bitchkitty of a wind storm we're experiencing in Seattle. The lights have been off for 6+ hours now, and Seattle City Light can't give us any info on when they might be back on.

Ordinarily I'd roll with it and make do with candles, but I'm the backup on-call for my department this week. The night shift is shorthanded tonight, which means electricity and, more importantly, internet access are somewhat important. Plus the fact that it's supposed to get down into the low 30s (F) tonight, and the electric start for the furnace is out of commission. So, with dog in tow, we've bailed out to the Hotel Monaco again - it's fast becoming our de facto dog-friendly household-disaster shelter.

Cellphones are working, we've got wifi at the hotel, but all our domains and primary email addresses are dead for the duration. Hopefully the power will be back on by morning...
