First thing I heard when I turned on the radio this morning:

Benazir Bhutto assasinated at a campaign rally in Rawalpindi

Utterly speechless.

I just received a phone call from Harborview. My neighbor just died.

Earlier today, after tracking down his last name, I called the hospital. They transferred me to the Surgical ICU, where his nurse let me speak to a former student of his. She was able to tell me more about him.

His name was Oswald Clement, and he was a retired Montessori teacher. He'd lived in the area for many years, and had no local family -- just a brother and a sister, both who live out of the country. He was Catholic, went to services at St. James Cathedral. He didn't drive, and always took the bus. And those bags he always carried were full of gym clothes -- he exercised several times a week at the downtown YMCA.

The moment of his death was peaceful, and a long-time family friend held his hand as he slipped away. From what it sounds like, he definitely was the sweet old man I always took him to be. They were able to arrange last rites at the hospital, and I will be going to the memorial service once it has been arranged.

The mood in the office is pretty melancholy today. We got news early this morning that someone in another department was killed in a climbing accident yesterday.

I didn't know him well, so I'm somewhat detached about it. The timing is rather ironic, though. It was only a few days ago, the day of the London bombing, when I realized I'd never experienced the death of a coworker before.

Rest in peace, Mark. You died doing what you loved, which is better than most ever get.

CNN claims that Reuters claims that some as-yet-unnamed Italian media is reporting that the Pope has died. But others say he's still alive.

Welcome to the Information Age, boys and girls. Facts are for pussies.

Godspeed, old man.
